Groups? They are one or more units like ships, submarines, aircrafts, helicopters or land units. Every group has to have 1 unit, it can also have multiple units.

Adding a new group. Click Add Vessel Group button, seen in below example image.

Then click anywhere on the oceans of global map view and new group is created with top left corner tab switching over to Groups if it was not already there. In the map you can see a new blue "Group Name 1" group created where you clicked.

Sea Power Mission Editor Groups Name 1, Adding A New Group

In this example screenshot we have the basic new group created with all data fields default on the left side panel. Lets go through the basics first.

Groups by default "Group Name 1" is a dropdown selector which only has one entry shown here assuming this is a brand new mission you're creating. Otherwise you can find all your groups in this dropdown menu, use the "arrow down" chevron or whatever its called right side of "Group Name 1" text.

Group Name by default "Group Name 1" is what name you wish to call this group. It can be anything, "MyGroup1" or "Nimitz Carrier Group" or whatever you want. You should keep it descriptive and informative that when you see the name you immediately recognize what its purpose is.

Side by default Blue dropdown, you can choose either Blue, Red or Neutral sides. Blue is the good guys, Red is the bad guys and Neutral is civilians or anyone who is not affiliated with either of the fighting sides.

Mission Type by default "No Mission" is a dropdown selector for multiple mission types. At the moment I have no clue what functionality these mission types represent or is it a simple cosmetic designator what this group should be used for. PMCTODO

% Change by default 100 is the percentage chance of this group appearing when mission starts. If its 100% then the group appears every single time mission is run, if its 50% then there is a RANDOM fifty-fifty chance that it appears or doesn't. You can set this percentage chance to low as 5, not sure if there is any reson to set it to 0% as that would mean there is zero percent chance this group appears in the mission, might as well delete the group then as it serves no purpose (or perhaps it could be used through triggers, hmm maybe, I don't know). PMCTODO

Formation by default Circle is a dropdown options for Loose, Circle, Vic, Echelon, Line Abreast, Line Astern, Box and Battlegroup.

ROE by default "Weapons Tight" is a dropdown options for Weapons Tight, Weapons Free and Weapons Hold. ROE is abbreviation from Rules Of Engagement. Weapons Tight means your units are reluctant heroes, they will be the quiet warriors not causing any trouble but if you pick a fight with them they will shoot you back. Weapons Free is shoot first ask questions later. Weapons Hold is NEVER fire even if fired upon. Overall weapons tight is the most common useful option to start off a mission.

Formation Editor button will bring up dialog to set your units in a specific formation.

Save Group button will save the group you have just created. Any waypoints present for the group are not saved, just the units themselves.

Unit Reference button brings up unit reference for the currently selected unit class.

Position Locked button is a on/off highlight button to keep the unit where its at, you cannot move it until you de-select Position Locked highlight button.

Nation dropdown is for all the countries/nations in the game. Its got [All Countries] and [Civilian] options as well.

Unit Category dropdown has options for Vessels, Submarines, Aircraft, Helicopters, Land Units and Biologic.
